Ballet Productions Canada Society grew out of the passion and creative visions of Li Yaming and Andrea Allen, professional dancers, dance educators, choreographers, dance producers and directors. Li and Allen saw the need to support dance education for all, regardless of financial circumstances; to develop dance audiences; and to provide performance opportunities for dancers in the early stages of their professional careers.
Li received his ballet training at the Beijing Dance Academy. Upon graduation in 1979, he was invited to join the resident ballet company, now known as the National Ballet of China, and was quickly promoted to principal dancer. In 1988, Li immigrated to Canada and joined the Theatre Ballet of Canada, in Ottawa.
As a dancer, Li has performed extensively across the United States, Canada and parts of Europe and had the opportunity to perform wide repertoire of roles and world premiere choreographies. Li began his teaching at the Beijing Dance Academy while he was enrolled in Dance Education major under the academy’s Ballet Department. Li has taught in Canada, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and the United States. He was the company teacher for the Ottawa Ballet and was invited to teach for Quinte Ballet School, Simon Fraser University, and the National Ballet of Canada among others.
Ms. Allen received her ballet training at the Vancouver Academy of Music under the direction of Soonee Lee, as well as Banff Centre of Fine Arts and the Pacific Northwest Ballet School. During that time, Ms. Allen had the opportunity to study with a great number of renowned dance artists such as David Earle, Laura Alonso, Marquita Lester and Lambros Lambrou. As a professional dancer, Ms. Allen has danced with the Theatre Ballet of Canada. Ms. Allen began teaching ballet in Ottawa, and co-founded Pacific DanceArts in Vancouver, Canada alongside Li Yaming.
Ms. Gerbrecht formerly danced with Ballet Theatre of Boston, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and Louisville Ballet Company. Her repertoire includes a wide range of classical and contemporary ballet. As an independent artist she has performed throughout North America and Asia and is an award winning choreographer. She served as Company Teacher and School Director of Louisville Ballet Company, and has taught for Ballet BC and Ballet Theatre of Boston. After retiring from ballet performance, Ms. Gerbrecht joined Flamenco Rosario, with whom she still performs. She is a founding member of Ballet Productions Canada and is on the faculty of Pacific DanceArts, Centro Flamenco, and Coastal City Ballet.
